Buying a Taurus online: FFL pickup rules by state

A Taurus bought online ships to a federally licensed dealer, an FFL, and you pick it up there after the paperwork and the background check. That part is the same in every state; what differs is what your state adds. This guide walks through the transfer and then sorts the states by their extra rules, with notes on where the Taurus line runs into rosters and magazine limits. Federal rules everywhere

Age 21 for a handgun from a dealer, which covers every Taurus pistol and revolver, including the TX22. Age 18 for rifles and shotguns such as the Circuit Judge and the Taurus-imported Rossi long guns.
Pickup in your state of residence with government photo ID showing your current address.
ATF Form 4473 and an FBI NICS check, or a state check in point-of-contact states.
Handguns ship to a licensed dealer only.

The transfer, step by step

Choose a dealer and ask the fee. Transfer fees commonly run $20 to $75. Confirm the dealer accepts incoming transfers.
Order and name the dealer. Price and stock are confirmed live before you pay.
We verify and ship. We confirm the dealer's license and ship with tracking and adult signature.
Pick up. Form 4473, the check, any state wait or permit paperwork, then the firearm is yours. Magazines, holsters and ammunition ordered with it ship to your door where legal.

States that add nothing

Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming. Virginia is the same with a one-handgun-per-30-days limit. Nevada and Pennsylvania run the check through a state system rather than the FBI; the experience is the same.

States with a waiting period

California 10 days; Colorado 3 days; Florida 3 days for handguns, or until the check clears if longer; Hawaii 14 days; Illinois 72 hours; Maine 72 hours; Maryland 7 days for handguns; New Mexico 7 days; Rhode Island 7 days; Vermont 72 hours; Washington 10 days. Minnesota's permit to purchase takes up to 7 days to issue. Plan a return trip.

States with a permit or card before purchase

Illinois FOID card. Massachusetts LTC or FID. New Jersey Firearms Purchaser ID card and a per-handgun permit. New York pistol license with the handgun added. Connecticut pistol permit or eligibility certificate. Maryland Handgun Qualification License. Hawaii permit to acquire. Minnesota permit to purchase or permit to carry. Iowa permit to acquire or permit to carry. Michigan dealers run the check directly; private handgun sales need a purchase license. Nebraska and North Carolina repealed their handgun permits in 2023. Get the document before ordering.

Rosters: where Taurus stands

California's handgun roster and Massachusetts's approved list decide what dealers there may transfer. Several Taurus revolvers and a few older pistols have appeared on the California roster over the years; most current striker-fired models, including the G3c, GX4 and TX22 in their standard forms, are not on it. Massachusetts has its own list. If a model will not add to your cart for one of those states, the roster is the reason, and revolvers are the models most likely to be available there.

Magazine limits

The G3c's 12-round and the GX4's 11-round magazines exceed the 10-round cap in California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Washington and the District of Columbia. Colorado, Illinois (handguns) and Vermont (handguns) cap at 15 and Delaware at 17, so the G3c and GX4 are fine there but the 15- and 17-round G3 magazines are not in every case. Taurus makes 10-round versions of most models for restricted states, and we ship only compliant magazines to those addresses. Revolvers have no magazine and no limit.

Feature rules

Threaded barrels are regulated on semi-automatic handguns in California, Connecticut, Maryland, New Jersey and New York, and Delaware, Illinois and Washington have added restrictions since 2023. The threaded TX22 models may be unavailable in those states; unthreaded versions exist.

Age 21 states

California, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Vermont and Washington set 21 for all firearms, which matters only for long guns. For every Taurus handgun the answer is 21 everywhere.

Carry after purchase

Carry law is separate from purchase law. Most states now allow permitless concealed carry from 21; others issue permits through the sheriff, a court or the state police. Delays, denials and returns

A NICS delay gives the FBI three business days; many dealers wait for a definite proceed. A denial can be appealed with the FBI. If a transfer cannot be completed, the dealer returns the firearm and we refund the price less shipping, as set out on the shipping page.

Warranty and service

Taurus USA's limited lifetime warranty covers the original owner, and repairs go to the Bainbridge, Georgia service center. Keep the receipt with the serial number; it is what the warranty, an insurer and a future buyer will ask for.
